Dear Bulldog Community,
Bowie State University is aware of an announcement from an external organization expressing its intent to visit our campus during Homecoming. We have not received a request for space for this event on campus.
Some members of our community have expressed concern about this group’s planned presence. As a public university, Bowie State is an open and accessible campus that welcomes members of the public, provided that all visitors follow university policies and respect our community standards.
Our nation’s universities have long been places where diverse ideas and perspectives are explored and debated. From the earliest days of higher education in the United States, colleges and universities have served as spaces where inquiry, learning and open dialogue help strengthen democracy and deepen understanding. As Maryland’s oldest Historically Black College and University, Bowie State proudly continues that legacy — championing the free exchange of ideas within an environment of mutual respect, safety and civility.
We recognize that some viewpoints may challenge or differ from your own. However, through civil discourse — the respectful exchange of ideas, even in disagreement — we cultivate the critical thinking and empathy that form the foundation of an informed citizenry. This is central to our mission as an institution of higher learning preparing leaders who can engage thoughtfully in a complex and diverse society.
While we welcome the public to our campus, all visitors must comply with university policies and protocols. Activities that disrupt university operations, interfere with scheduled events or endanger the safety and well-being of others will not be tolerated.
As we celebrate the tradition of Homecoming, we encourage everyone to focus on the pride, unity and shared purpose that define our Bulldog community. Thank you for continuing to embody the spirit of respect, inclusion and excellence that makes Bowie State University a vibrant place to learn, work and grow.
With appreciation,
Aminta H. Breaux, Ph.D.
President
