Just Do It: How Jade Ward Stands Up for Students at Bowie State


Jade Ward ’26 rose from freshman vice president to BSU’s 41st SGA president by actively advocating for student voices, fostering inclusive campus dialogue and boldly pushing for stronger academic accountability. Her leadership journey reflects a commitment to service and inclusion that she says prepared her to lead — and inspired her plans to pursue a Ph.D. in sociology.

Art, Advocacy and Adventure: Alexis Kennedy’s Creative Journey


Alexis Kennedy discovered Bowie State through a national theater festival and built a rich artistic and community‑centered career shaped by the university’s vibrant programs. Today, she boldly directs, mentors and creates opportunities for others while staying deeply connected to BSU and its mission, recently leading a Black History Month performance for the university's Prison Education Program.

MacKenzie Scott rewrites $79B higher ed donation playbook, giving to HBCUs and community colleges

Between 2015 and 2019, the average Ivy League school received 178 times as much philanthropic funding as the average HBCU. But billionaire MacKenzie Scott is bypassing the Ivy Leage, and many of the donations she has made to HBCUs and community colleges are historic - including $50 million to Bowie State in 2025.

Senator Alsobrooks underscored the role of HBCUs in Maryland’s economy, also noting the contribution of HBCUs to the state’s economic and workforce development cannot be overstated. Bowie State's support of innovation through a business incubator was cited.
