BSU Community,

This year marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. Today, we pause to remember those who lost their lives and the families whose lives were forever changed. The memory of that day reminds us how quickly life can change and how important it is to hold on to the values that bring us together.

In the days that followed, our nation found strength in unity. People from every background reached out to help one another, proving that we are more alike than different. That spirit of compassion and resilience continues to offer lessons for us all. By reflecting on our history, we gain perspective that can help us shape a better future.

At Bowie State University, our mission of education is rooted in that same belief — that knowledge and understanding can light the way forward. As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Education allows us to carry that light — the flame of faith and the torch of truth, preparing each generation to lead with wisdom and empathy.

As we remember 9/11, let us honor those we lost by striving to learn, grow and contribute to a world marked by greater understanding and respect. You can learn more about this day through the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.

On Friday, September 12, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Beacon room, join the Bowie State community for a campus event, “Love East of the River - September 11: A Day of Remembrance and Service.” Funded by a Transform Mid-Atlantic Campus Grant, Love East of the River and the BSU community will assemble 300 care packages for Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center, the Washington Metropolitan Police Department and Howard University Hospital. This will be followed by a panel luncheon with first responders.

Sincerely,

Aminta H. Breaux
