Dear Bowie State University Community,

On Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Americans across the nation will exercise one of the most fundamental rights and responsibilities of citizenship — the right to vote. As Election Day approaches, I encourage every eligible member of our Bowie State University community who has not yet cast a ballot to make time to participate in this important democratic process.

Polls in Maryland will be open on Tuesday, November 3, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Whether you are voting for the first time or have participated in elections for decades, your voice matters, and your vote is an opportunity to help shape the future of our communities, our state, and our nation.

As Maryland's oldest Historically Black College or University, founded in 1865, Bowie State University has a special connection to the struggle for educational opportunity, equal rights, and full participation in American democracy. Our institution was established during a pivotal period in our nation's history, when the promise of freedom and citizenship remained beyond the reach of many Americans. Generations before us worked, struggled, and sacrificed to secure opportunities and rights that we must never take for granted.

Our history reminds us that democracy is not simply something we inherit. It is something we must continually strengthen through participation, engagement, and a commitment to the common good.

This year's election will determine leadership at the federal, state, and local levels, including representatives whose decisions influence education, economic opportunity, public safety, healthcare, and many other issues affecting our daily lives. Regardless of political affiliation or individual perspectives, the right to vote provides each eligible citizen an opportunity to influence those decisions and hold elected leaders accountable.

The connection between higher education and democracy is especially meaningful at Bowie State. As a public university committed to preparing students for purposeful lives and meaningful careers, our responsibility extends beyond the classroom. We must also prepare graduates to become informed, engaged, and responsible citizens who contribute to the well-being of their communities and society.

This commitment is reflected in our strategic plan, Boldly Forward, which calls upon us to advance academic distinction, transform the student experience, foster inclusivity and equity, and embrace growth and innovation. Moving boldly forward is not simply about advancing our institution; it is also about empowering our students and our entire university community to become active participants in shaping a better future. Just as we challenge our students to think critically, lead courageously, and use their talents to make a difference, we must demonstrate those same values through our own civic engagement.

Moving boldly forward requires us to recognize that our voices matter, our actions have consequences, and each of us has a responsibility to contribute to the greater good.

Whatever the election results may be, I encourage our campus community to approach the days and weeks ahead with civility, mutual respect, and a renewed commitment to democratic participation. Our responsibility as citizens does not end when the polls close. It continues through our engagement with public issues, service to our communities, and willingness to work together across differences. These are the very principles that strengthen both our democracy and our university community.

I extend my sincere appreciation to the students, faculty, staff, and alumni who have supported voter education, registration, and Get Out the Vote initiatives. Your efforts exemplify the civic leadership and engagement we seek to cultivate across the BSU campus and reflect the spirit of Boldly Forward.

For those voting in Maryland, please visit the Maryland State Board of Elections to confirm your assigned polling location and obtain additional election information. If you are in line when polls close at 8 p.m., you will still be permitted to vote. Those voting in other states should consult their respective election authorities for polling hours and locations.

As we reflect on the significance of this election, let us remember that the progress we enjoy today was made possible by generations who understood the importance of standing up, speaking out, and participating in the democratic process. On November 3, let us honor their legacy not only with our words, but with our actions. Make a plan. Exercise your right to vote. Let your voice be heard.

As we move Boldly Forward together, let us continue to demonstrate what it means to be informed, engaged, and responsible citizens. Our commitment to shaping a brighter future extends beyond the boundaries of our campus to the communities we serve and the democracy we share.

Your Vote. Your Voice. Boldly Forward.

Sincerely,
