BSU Community,
In light of recent reports of threats made against several Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) today, I want to assure you that no threats have been made against Bowie State University.
Out of an abundance of caution, we have taken additional steps to strengthen campus security, including:
- Security guards are stationed at the East Loop booth.
- A police officer is assigned to the West Loop entrance near the MARC station.
- 10 additional armed security guards have been assigned for increased visibility and foot patrols.
- All officers have been instructed to be highly visible and extra vigilant in their patrols.
- BSU IDs will be checked at the gates for everyone entering campus. All faculty, staff and students should wear their Bulldog ID cards in a visible area.
These measures build on the many security enhancements we have made in recent years to keep our campus safe for students, faculty, staff and visitors. These campus security upgrades include:
- Our campus-wide security camera system has been expanded to 594 cameras, allowing law enforcement to monitor activities in real time.
- License plate readers manage vehicle traffic and help ensure safety on and around campus.
- Metal detectors have been added to strategic locations, including buildings, sports arenas and campus entrances.
- 19 Blue Light Emergency Phones have been placed throughout campus, providing direct access to emergency services.
- Enhanced lighting towers improve visibility and deter suspicious activity across campus.
- New fencing helps control campus access points.
- ShotSpotter weapon-detection technology enables law enforcement to respond quickly to any potential threats.
At Bowie State, the safety and well-being of our community is a priority. We remain fully committed to investing in the resources and technology needed to maintain a secure environment. Our goal is to ensure that our community feels safe and supported on our campus.
Thank you for doing your part to keep Bowie State safe. We’ll continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed.
Please remain aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity to the Bowie State University Department of Public Safety at 301-860-4040.
Sincerely,
Aminta H. Breaux
President
Bowie State University
