(BOWIE, Md.) – A Bowie State University science student, Daliyah Brown won a first-place award for undergraduate research in biological sciences for presenting her research into the compounds of medicinal plants at the Emerging Researchers National Conference in STEM (ERN), held last month in Washington, DC. .

Four other Bowie State biology students also participated in the conference, including Jordan Oliver, Ophilia Salubi, Esther Olawunmi and Mariam Koroma. The students were part of a larger group of eleven student researchers from six universities, who also presented at the conference as part of the research team that works with Bowie State biology professor Dr. Anne Osano. The students worked together to prepare for the opportunity to have their research examined by industry professionals.

“They can explain to the community what they did and why it’s important,” said Dr. Osano. “You have students from all over the nation, and they’re competing in their research.”

ERN is a national conference with participation from universities across the nation. The conference is aimed at university undergraduate and graduate students who participate in programs funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The objectives of the conference are to help undergraduate and graduate students to enhance their science communication skills and to better understand how to prepare for science careers in a global workforce.

Dr. Osano was thrilled to have so many of her students’ abstracts accepted at this latest conference. Bowie State’s participation not only highlights the university as a quality research institution, but the process of getting research accepted also boosts the students’ professional profile once they make it through the rigorous process.

“They become even more competitive when they’re looking for a job,” said Dr. Osano. “The job market knows this is a good candidate if they can do research, present it and convince someone that ‘Hey, I have something important here.’”
