Bowie State Communications Graduate Awarded 2024 HBCU Media Collective Fellowship

Dejah Miles Joins Cohort of Emerging HBCU Journalists

(BOWIE, Md.) – Dejah Miles, a 2023 graduate of Bowie State University, has been chosen alongside eight other talented young journalists for the prestigious 2024 HBCU Media Collective fellowship, sponsored by Dow Jones and Columbia University. Miles is the first Bowie State University student or alumna to participate in the program.  

From May 29th to June 12th, Miles and other fellows selected for the journalism training program will collaborate with seasoned journalists at Dow Jones's Barron's and MarketWatch newsrooms. Additionally, they will engage in newsroom training sessions organized by The Wall Street Journal. As part of the program's initial phase, participants will also attend graduate-level courses at the Ivy League, Columbia University. 

Miles emerged as a standout candidate among a competitive pool of applicants. She was hand-selected by deans and faculty members from Howard University, Morehouse College, Morgan State University, Spelman College, North Carolina A&T, Florida A&M University, and here at Bowie State University.  

Miles brings to the fellowship her prior experience writing for The Bowie Sun and Mother Jones. Miles attributes her success to the communications coursework and the guidance of her professor, Dr. Karima Haynes, whose support paved the way for her internships and participation in the fellowship program. 

The HBCU Media Collective, a joint initiative aimed at empowering emerging journalists from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, provides a platform for honing skills, expanding networks, and contributing to media diversity.
